Incarceration

Who We Are

In 1996, my oldest daughter gave birth to my first grandchild, Quentin. His father was incarcerated at the time. I can still recall having to call the jail and ask them to give him the message that his son had been born. It was a joyous and yet sad time. His father was incarcerated until he reached the age of twelve.Quentin was probably about four years old when he started asking questions about his father and he was nine years old when he finally met his father in prison. We watched as Quentin struggled with the desire to want to visit his father but he had anxieties about having to go through the visiting procedures at the prison. We watched as he struggled with abandonment, trust and authority issues as well, all of which are common among K.I.D.S. We began getting Quentin involved in Virginia C.U.R.E. when he was eight years old. We wanted him to know he was not alone in his issues of being stigmatized and ostracized. We have worked with educators and administrators who are not aware of the issues children with an incarcerated parent have. We also knew we had to educate him on breaking the cycle of incarceration. Quentin like other children are truly the forgotten victims. Quentin is not alone, there are many children, too many just like him in Virginia. It is our desire to reach out to these children and make a difference in their lives.

Quentin was and is my inspiration for K.I.D.S. through his struggles and achievements I realized the need for K.I.D.S. throughout Virginia to be recognized, acknowledged and validated.  As we have watched Quentin reach out to other K.I.D.S., we know we are making a difference in K.I.D.S. lives. Therefore we are......

                                   Changing the Future

                   One Step at a Time

We are the world, we are the children

There comes a time when we heed a certain call
When the world must come together as one
There are people dying
Oh, and it's time to lend a hand to life
The greatest gift of all

We can't go on pretending day by day
That someone, somehow will soon make a change
We're all a part of God's great big family
And the truth - you know love is all we need

We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
so let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me

Well, send'em your heart
So they know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us
By turning stone to bread
And so we all must lend a helping hand

We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
so let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me

When you're down and out
There seems no hope at all
But if you just believe
There's no way we can fall
Well, well, well, let's realize
That one change can only come
When we stand together as one

We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
so let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me
